Common faults and troubleshooting methods of padlocks

Dec 13, 2023

Padlocks are widely used in daily life. Because the parts are enclosed in the lock body and do not need to be installed during use, they rarely malfunction. Padlocks that are used outdoors for a long time may have malfunctions such as the lock core and lock beam not jumping.

1. Don't turn the lock

The failure of the lock core to rotate often occurs in padlocks that are locked outside the door for a long time and are not opened frequently. The padlock has been exposed to wind and rain for a long time, and corrosion and dirt have accumulated between the lock core and the lock body, making the lock core unable to rotate.

Before troubleshooting, you should carefully check whether the key you hold is the key to the lock, and then troubleshoot after being sure.

The troubleshooting method is to put in a little diesel or gasoline, wait for a while, insert the key, and try to turn it on. If it cannot be opened, add some diesel or gasoline, soak it for a while, and use the key to gently twist it back and forth until it is fully opened. Be careful not to use excessive force and break the key.

In addition, the lock core may not turn due to damage to the key teeth. At this time, you should carefully look for the damage to the toothbrush. If the damage is minor, the lock can still be unlocked after repair; if the damage is major, you should find another spare key to unlock.

2. The key is not flexible in insertion and extraction

After the key has been used for a long time, it is not very flexible to insert and remove it. You can sprinkle some pencil powder {graphite} into the keyhole, and then turn it on and off a few times. Do not add engine oil to the keyhole to lubricate it, as this will affect the movement of the marbles and cause unexpected opening failures.

3. Lock the beam and don't jump

The failure of the lock beam to jump is mostly caused by the excessive tolerance of the shape and position of the lock beam. Scratching and squeezing occur on a certain side of the lock beam and the lock beam hole. Coupled with corrosion and accumulated dirt, the lock beam cannot jump.

Troubleshooting method: Insert the key into the lock core, turn it to the open position, and hold it there, gently tap the lock body downwards with a small hammer or pull down the lock body forcefully. If it does not open after being shaken, you can add a little gasoline or diesel to the lock beam, and then tap it gently until the lock beam pops out. After the lock beam pops out, use a soft hammer to repair the lock beam. It can continue to be used after repair.

4. The key breaks into the lock body

The failure of the key breaking into the padlock lock body occurs frequently, and the troubleshooting method should be determined according to the breaking situation.

The key is broken into the lock body from the root, leaving a section at the center of the lock. Use tweezers or needle nose pliers to remove it.

The key breaks into the lock core from the middle and cannot be shaken out. In this case, the only way is to remove the seven-hole sealing sheet on the lock body, shake out the marbles, take out the lock core and the broken key, then reinstall the lock core, marbles, etc., and seal them with aluminum wire.
